Smart Home Technician - Kickstart

This is a role suited to those who are interested in joining the Smart Home and Home Cinema sector as an installation engineer. No prior experience is necessary, you will be provided on the job training and guided through the practical day-to-day tasks.


You will get hands on installing a wide range of smart home and home cinema solutions. You will be involved in all stages of projects:

  • Initial pre-wire stage when we install cables, into client’s properties, during the construction phase
  • Installing equipment and the associated cabling into computer racks at one of our workshops
  • Returning to the client site, once the construction work has finished, to install various smart home solutions and/or fit out the home cinema room
  • Showing clients how to use the various Smart Home/Home Cinema solutions


It is likely that you will also get to see the process of how Smart Home and Home Cinema rooms are designed.


You may also be exposed to several other activities involved with running a small business e.g., marketing, sales, procurement, office management, etc.


In addition, you will also have time allocated to complete the Cabling and Infrastructure Technician (CIT) Pathway training course provided by CEDIA (https://cedia.net/certification/cit). The CIT exam will also be funded meaning that by the end of the 6-month Kickstart placement you should have gain an industry recognised certification.


Health & Safety and a First Aid course will also be provided.


Suitable construction site clothing and associated PPE safety equipment will be provided.

What is the Kickstart Scheme?

The government has introduced a new Kickstart Scheme to fund the direct creation of high-quality jobs for young people at the highest risk of long-term unemployment. It will give young people the chance to build their confidence and skills in the workplace, and to gain experience that will improve their chances of going on to find long-term, sustainable work.


Eligibility for the role

This role is open to applicants who match the Kickstart Scheme criteria i.e., 16- to 24-year-olds, on Universal Credit and who are at risk of long-term unemployment. Job Description

Invariably you will be at the centre of our Client Smart Home and Home Cinema projects. You will be part of the installation team responsible for transforming spaces in people’s homes into amazing smart home/home cinema experiences for our Clients.


You may be working at one of our offsite locations or at a Client site, where you may need to directly interact in a profession manner with other trades and as well as the Client or their representatives.


Your days will be varied, exciting and sometimes challenging…. we doubt you will ever be bored.


We will collaboratively establish a training path with you that will include clear progression goals.


Job Type

6 Month Kickstart Scheme – possibly leading to Permanent


Role is very much suitable for all genders


Full-time, Monday to Friday, 09:00Hrs to 17:30Hrs i.e., 42.5 Hours per week


Roles & Responsibilities

You will play a key role within our installation teams, you will always be expected to be professional and courteous whilst delivering rigorously high standards for our Clients.


You will need to be meticulously accurate with your documentation including your time sheets.


Your role will include, but not limited to completing yourself or shadowing another team member who is completing, the following types of activities:


1st Fix Activities:

  • Installation of pre-wire cables around Client’s properties as they are being built
  • Cable termination: CAT6 Data Cables, etc.
  • Testing of cables


2nd Fix Activities:

  • Server Rack Building


3rd Fix Activities:

  • Installation of various smart home & home cinema equipment

Experience, Skills/Abilities and Qualifications

Experience

  • None required – training will be provided


Skills/Abilities

  • Excellent time management
  • Confident and clear communicator, both written and verbal – fluent in English
  • Ability to thrive under pressure
  • Have the enthusiasm to go above and beyond when needed
  • Excellent team player
  • Have the initiative and confidence to carry out work unsupervised on-site individually
  • Proactive and passionate individual with a can-do, must-do attitude
  • Ability to occasional work ad-hoc overtime hours is preferable but certainly not mandatory
  • Ability to occasionally work while staying away from home overnight, in paid for accommodation, during the working week is preferable but certainly not mandatory


Qualifications

  • Full clean UK driving license with access to reliable transport is preferable but certainly not mandatory
  • Documentation to confirm you have right to work in UK
  • DBS certificate will be required to be submitted in the event of the individual being offered the position

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to move equipment weighing up 22KG
  • Ability to position self to install equipment under desks or up ladders/working at height platforms

Salary & Benefits

  • Salary; National Minimum Wage (for those of at least school leaving age) or National Living Wage (for those aged 23 and over)

  • Fundamentals of Wiring/Cabling
  • Fundamentals of Cable Connectors, Termination, and Testing

  • Fundamentals of Retrofit
  • Fundamentals of Equipment Installation
  • First Aid Course
  • The following exams will be fully funded for the applicant:
  • ECS Health and Safety Assessment
  • CEDIA - Certified Cabling & Infrastructure Technician (CIT) https://cedia.net/certification/cit
  • Subject to passing the ‘ECS Health and Safety Assessment’ then a ‘Network Infrastructure Trainee ECS Card’ (H&S card required to work on certain construction sites) will be fully funded for the applicant
  • Company uniform & associated PPE
