See the following sections for further details about the independent living technologies for people who are blind or have vision impairments.
Voice control of your environment
Voice or ‘Text to Speech’ control of specific items e.g., Using a voice assistant like Amazon Alexa to open/close blinds, turn on/off lights, boil kettle, turn on a fan, turn on TVs or control central heating by voice command alone. This provides hands-free operation of your environment.
Useful for those with unable to see or with limited vision of the digital displays or physical interfaces controls of the environmental systems e.g., thermostat displays or rotary dial on the radiator valve.
Voice activated communications
Using the ‘Drop In’ or ‘Call a Contact’ function of Amazon Alexa to initiate a voice call with a relative or an emergency contact without needing to dial a number or even have a phone close to hand.
Useful for those that are unable to or have difficulty seeing the digital display of a phone.
Smart home scenes
Smart home scene, that can simultaneously automate numerous actions around the home e.g., ‘Good Morning’ scene that turns on the lights at an appropriate light level, switches on a TV/radio station to a favourite channel, opens blinds/curtains and starts boiling a kettle.
Automating tasks, that are typically manual tasks, to reduce the risks of falls.
Useful for those that would struggle to move around a property.
Occupancy activated room lighting
Lights in rooms automatically turn on when someone enters or leaves the room depending upon the time of day and whether the room is dark. No more having to reach to switch lights on walls to turn lights on/off.
Useful for those with limited vision, who require improved lighting levels within spaces, but might struggle to use various physical lighting controls.
Internet connected doorbell
Internet connected doorbell / intercom system to easily answer visitors, and remotely open a locked door, from any room in a house without having to physically go to the door. Access can be granted to a property by family members who aren’t in the home e.g., Emergency responders/carers could be given access if resident is unable to get to door.
Useful for those that would struggle to move around their property and get to their front door.
Fall detection sensors
Fall detection sensors with push notification/email alerts sent to family members or informal care providers. Fall sensors are ceiling mounted meaning the person in the home doesn’t need to use a wearable fall alarm device or be able to reach a phone to summon assistance.
Useful for those likely to falls due to trip hazards.
Automated doors
Automated doors, that can be remotely triggered to open or close, can make the process of allowing a visitor to enter or leave a home much simpler. Combined with enhanced proximity sensors for safer operation.
Useful for those who struggle to get to their front door.
CCTV recognition event activation
CCTV cameras that can recognise elements such as the presence of people or a car on a driveway and even identify specific vehicle number plates.
Detection of known number plate can trigger events e.g., a family member’s car could trigger an audible announcement within the home informing the resident that their family member is arriving. Or the presence of a person on the driveway could trigger an audible announcement that there is someone on the drive.
Useful for those that can’t see visitors arriving onto their driveway
Motorised window blinds/curtains
Motorised window blinds/curtains that can be opened as part of a smart home scene or via voice command. You no longer need to go around your home, visiting each window, to check if they are open or closed before physically opening or close the relevant blind/curtain.
Also, no more having to reach out to find the associated pull cords or curtain material to manually operate the blind/curtain which can reduce the risks of falls.
Useful for those unable to or who would have difficulties navigating around their house to get to every window. Motorised window blinds/curtains are also useful for those that might struggle to manually operate a blind or curtain.
Motorised multipoint door locks
Multipoint door locks that automatically engage into place and secure a door when it is closed without the need to lift the door handle. The locks also have an inbuilt motor, that can be remotely triggered, allowing the door to be unlocked without having to insert a physical key.
This is useful when combined with an automated door opener.
Useful for those that struggle to get to their front door to open it to allow a visitor into their home.
Motorised window openers
Motorised window openers, that can be remotely triggered to open or close, allowing the window to be operated without having to reach for handles on the window which can reduce the chance of falls.
Voice activation is also available for those unable to manually operate windows.
Useful for those unable to or who would have difficulties navigating around their house to get to every window to check whether the window is open or closed. This solution is also useful for those prone to falls.
Door / window contact sensors
Door/Window contact sensors that can send push notification/email alerts to service user, resident, family members or informal care providers when the door/window has been left opened for too long.
A great solution to improve home security and reduce risks of burglary through open windows or doors.
Useful for those unable to or who would have difficulties navigating around their house to get to every window to check whether the window is open or closed. This solution is also useful for those prone to falls.
Smart intruder alarm
Smart intruder alarm that automatically, when the resident goes to bed, checks all windows and doors around the home are closed, if required closes automated doors/windows, turns off all the lights, TVs and radios around the home, before arming the night-time mode of the intruder alarm.
Useful for those unable to or who would have difficulties navigating around their house to check if all their doors and windows are closed, lights are turned off, TVs and radios have been turned off and blinds/curtains are closed prior to arming their intruder alarm when they go to bed or leave their home.
