At Home

Coronavirus (COVID-19)

has dramatically changed the way we live our lives.

Issues with staying at home

In March 2020, the UK Government issued work from home and then subsequently issued Stay at Home guidance.

With most of the UK having to either not leave at all or significantly curtailing the reasons for leaving their home while shielding/social distancing. Also, with many people, and a significant number of those people for the first time, attempting to work from their homes.

This new requirement to Stay at Home, with the additional levels of stress and anxiety caused by Coronavirus, has led to many people reflecting on the changed role that their home now plays in their lives. Our homes have taken on the role for not only sheltering us but also now have the responsibility for being our new places of work and our new entertainment venues.

With many of us having never previously placed this type of expectation on our homes it has exposed several weaknesses in their current design and capabilities.

  • The impact on people’s mental health/wellbeing when working from home; due to an inability to detach from work at the end of the working day and the struggles associated with maintaining a healthy work/life balance due to the lack of a separate defined work environment. Often meaning, whilst people gain additional time at home due to not having to commute to work, that people will end up working even more hours in a day compared to when they had travelled in to a physical office location as there is no perceived separation of home and work environment. Over 40% of employees working from home are working longer hours than they would in a standard working day, a recent survey found1
  • The potential regulatory and data protection risks; created by people using their shared and sometimes insecurely configured home Wi-Fi networks and their own personal IT equipment to access company networks and data while working from home
  • Poor network connectivity impacting your ability to effectively interact with colleagues/clients/suppliers; when you have those incredibly frustrating moments when attending or worse still hosting the latest ‘Zoom’ online meeting and it being disrupted due to a poor Wi-Fi signal leading to either the meeting continually disconnecting or the video/audio quality being diminished to a level that makes it virtually unusable
  • The damage to people’s professional appearance/credibility; from the surprise interruption of work calls/online meetings by children, pets, etc. in the background as parents, while constrained by the poor Wi-Fi coverage in their homes, are limited to working in communal areas of the house
  • The distraction created/disruption caused to the message your trying to convey whilst on a video call; due to busy/cluttered backgrounds or environments with poor lighting
  • The stress created in the family group/home from the lack of separation while studying; due to the difficulties in providing children with separate work areas/stations where they can concentrate free from distraction while siblings all try to access online remote learning simultaneously, which due to the limited Wi-Fi coverage means they are all grouped together into the same room, where the signal is strongest
  • The negative impact caused by boredom whilst staying at home; where you might have limited or no facilities for entertainment or relaxation. With the recent Office National Statics (ONS) Opinions and Lifestyle Survey (OPN) survey finding that 48% of people surveyed felt their well-being was being affected by boredom, loneliness, anxiety or stress2
  • The effect on our physical health due to sedentary behaviour and low levels of physical activity; due to a lack of a suitable/welcoming environment to exercise in the home and with people’s reluctant to visit communal gyms, people are exercising less which can have negative effects on the health, well-being and quality of life of individuals

Issues with going out

On 11th May 2020 the UK Government issued its plan to rebuild, which saw the introduction of phase two; ‘Smarter controls’, which gradually adjust the social restrictions imposed by the Stay at Home guidance in 3 steps.

As part of the ‘Smarter controls’ many of UK businesses were issued “COVID-19 Secure” guidelines and phased opening of business is planned.

These “COVID-19 Secure” guidelines mean that, as the relevant business begin to open, the way that we interact with the services they provide will be dramatically different than the days before lockdown.

Attending entertainment venues such as the going to the Cinema will be an almost unrecognisable experience for many and for most it may be something that they would rather totally avoid doing altogether. With the latest Government announcement on the 31st July 2020, stating that the wearing of a face covering is required when attending cinema3.
